THIRD TIME A CHARM By Ruby Simmonds
In the spring of 2001, I decided I wanted to take some computer courses. I contacted the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. They were in the process of remodeling their computer area, so they moved temporarily into a vacant apartment at a local retirement community. I went to two classes a week and learned enough to get going. As I went further, I realized I needed more training. After a month, the computer classes were moved back to the library. I went back and took another class, with which I was not at all happy. In March, 2003, I looked into attending the Kansas Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (KRCBVI) and was told to contact my local rehabilitation teacher, Nancy Johnson. First, Nancy requested that a computer in-home outreach lesson be provided by computer instructor Phil White. After four lessons in my home, Phil told me the best thing I could do was to enroll in computer classes at KRCBVI. He recommended this to Nancy. She completed the necessary paperwork for referral to the Center. I began my computer training at the Center in June, 2003. I had a very good teacher, whose name is Colleen Talley. I really learned a lot. I still contact her occasionally with questions. KRCBVI is not just for young people. It is also for older ones who want to learn to be independent so they can work or take care of themselves. I hope my story encourages people to go and get the training they need. A lot of nice people are out there to help them. Editor’s Note: Kansas has seven rehabilitation specialists serving various areas across the state. These individuals can serve as a point of first contact if you are blind or severely visually impaired and need help. Call toll free, 1-866-317-4279. |
